Screening Tool: Autism Spectrum Disorder (in Adults)

This survey is designed to provide a quick assessment of whether you might have signs or symptoms related to disorders that could be classified under “autism,” including Asperger Syndrome. However, no test is 100% accurate. No matter what your score is, you should seek help from a health professional if you have any concerns about yourself or your loved ones.

Your partner (or you) may have an Autism Spectrum Disorder if you (or your partner) has most or all of the following traits. Does s/he...

1. Have difficulty interpreting body language and facial expressions?
2. Have difficulty understanding jokes, metaphor and sarcasm because they take everything in a very literal way?
3. Struggle to maintain friendships?
4. Become withdrawn and seem to be uninterested in others, appearing aloof?
5. Have poor social awareness and find it hard to imagine how their behaviour impacts on other people?
6. Love routines and get very upset if these are broken?
7. Have an intense and all-consuming special interest or hobby?
8. Have unusual responses to sensory input? E.g. Are they hypersensitive (or undersensitive) to touch or smell or noise or taste (e.g. having a very limited diet)?

This screening tool is based on common signs and symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorders (such as Asperger Syndrome), and is adapted from the National Autistic Society website (in the United Kingdom).
